Chapter 8

A New Evil Has Sprung

All the hunters, including Quzil and Zwart, entered the training ground. It was a vast arena with no space for audiences but carriers for weapons, it was divided into four practice grounds- the archery arena, the spearthrowing arena, the swordmen’s arena and the simple fighting arena for sparring.

“Ah, I still remember this place, what lovely childhood memories I made here” said Presto joining hands to his cheek.

“I still remember how you once cried when your whip broke” smirked Dusk to Gloria.

“Well, it was because I really value my whips, unlike you do to your head” she replied looking at his bandages.

“I’m ready to smash things now!” said Angus holding his brand new slamhammer.

“The sparring ground is free, let’s fight a bit over there” said Vert and headed towards it.

“I’m all ready now, if that wretched Agalia shows up again, she will have it from me, you’ll see” said Presto stretching his arms with his new beakgloves on.

“She’s dead, isn’t she?” said Dusk to Chairo and she nodded.

“The High Sentinels really are powerful, aren’t they?” said Rico.

“Come on, let’s go” said Chairo “We’ll start with archery.”

“Take care Quzil” said Zwart.

“Wait, you’re not staying?”

“I wish I could, but I have work back in the village.”

“You’re really choosing your dumb work over him?” said Gloria.

“I’m sorry” said Zwart embarrassingly.

“No, it’s alright, you don’t need to skip your work for me” replied Quzil with a smile. Zwart flew away back to his clanring leaving the others behind and Chairo brought Quzil to the archery arena to teach him it while the hunters sparred in the sparring arena.

The archery arena was like a long running track with round target boards in the end, they were big wooden spheres with a big blue circle that was the outer zone, a red middle circle that was the middle zone and a small black circle that was the inner zone. Chairo pulled out an arrow and dragged it across her bow. “Look at me carefully” she said and released the arrow at the target board, it hit the black centre mark.

“That was brilliant!” praised Quzil.

“Now it’s your turn” she said and handed him the bow, he pulled out an arrow from the quiver and dragged it across the bow but as it was his first time the arrow didn’t sit quite right, it was shifting the other way.

“Not like that, I’ll show you” she said and held his hand that was holding the bow and with her other hand grabbed the arrow, “Hold my hand now” she said and Quzil, now sweating a bit held her hand, he could hear her breathe right next to his face, she pulled it far back and released it, this time it hit the edge of the black zone.

“This is a normal score for a beginner” she soothed him.

Meanwhile, the other hunters were busy testing their skills on each other. Angus, Vert and Presto kept attacking each other with their weapons but also were dodging it, trying
